Even when circumstances get difficult, by closely imitating our now risen Lord Jesus Christ and embracing His full measure of grace and peace in our lives, we can share in Christ’s joy and imperishable kingdom inheritance.
God has specially designed goals for each Bible book to equip His people in significant areas of training (2 Tim 3:15-16). One way to summarize Romans’ purpose is: ‘Laying a solid foundation for the people of God.’ The force behind this book is the powerful way the gospel of Jesus Christ is presented, defended and applied so that God’s people, no matter what nationality, completely set themselves apart for God (Rom 12:1-2)."
The powerful gospel message and its implications for our lives is presented in Romans 1:1-7. Romans 1:1-7 answers the question,“What is the Gospel?”
This portion of the introduction sent to the church at Rome reveals Paul’s eagerness to visit in order to preach to them the gospel message (1:15). Paul focuses upon our clear purpose in the gospel to call others to the obedience that comes from faith (1:5, 17), and so now he prays for an opening to do so to those who are in Rome, because many times he had been hindered from coming to them (1:10, 13 ; 15:22-24).
The attributes of God are made known to all humanity. Yet, people choose to exchange the pursuit of knowing God for self-seeking interests and wild living.
We must also remember that Paul has been dealing with various self-serving excuses which human beings attempt to make before God (Rom. 1:20 & 2:1). A self-righteous Jew might applaud Paul’s message up to this point, for the immorality of pagans condemns all who face God’s just wrath.
Paul moves us forward toward this undeniable conclusion that all, both Jews and Gentiles alike, are under the just condemnation of sin (3:9). “Who can say, ‘I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin’?” (Prov. 20:9) “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.” (Eccl. 7:20) Paul’s universal aim is unmistakable: the human race is ‘Totally Depraved’
Why does Paul after his deep theological discussion on justification by faith in chapter 3 suddenly leap into stories from the Old Testament? Paul needed to further establish the reason why people, including religious Jews, cannot obtain the needed righteousness by their good works and observation of religious rites. He proved what he was teaching was not contrary to the OT law but established it (3:31). He demonstrated his point by using two familiar and indisputable illustrations from the Old Testament scriptures.
Paul might have convinced them that both Gentile and Jew similarly are sinners and need salvation, but the Jews needed convincing that salvation was also for the Gentiles, the non-Jew. There are not two ways to be saved, one for the Jew and one for the Gentile, but one common means; not two churches, but one (Eph 4:4-6).
A) The Blessings of Justification (Romans 5:1-5)
B)
Contrast of God’s Love vs. Human Love (Romans 5:6-8)
C) Salvation from God’s Wrath (Romans 5:9-11)
The previous verses of chapter 5 lead one to ask, “How is Jesus able to extend such benefits (love, justification, reconciliation) to humankind?” Paul begins in v. 12 with the linking word Therefore demonstrating the connection between what has come before and the lesson he is about to begin.
Romans 6 often confuses Christians because it refers to the ceremony of baptism but doesn’t mention water. The baptism discussed here is not talking about the form or ceremony of baptism but the meaning and symbolism of baptism.
The Lawʼs power over us is gone as believers, but we have gained a new Master! Living under grace means that we have transferred to a new and better Master, the Lord Jesus Christ. 2
What you believe matters! Doubts about the value of the Law and loving intent of God will impede our spiritual progress.
