The Bible Teaching Commentary
Protect His Disciples (John 17:13-15) is the third of six requests made during Jesus' lengthy prayer at the end of the Upper Room Discourse which shows us how much the evil one is pursing God's people and why we need to seek more of God's protection. Includes Bible study questions.
3) Protect His Disciples (John 17:13-15)
“I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15).
Just as Jesus faced opposition, so will His believers. Once they belong to Him, they no longer belong to the world. The world opposes them and Satan (the evil one) works through ‘his‘ world to oppose them.
-
What is Jesus’ purpose of coming and teaching us (13)?
-
What has the Lord given the believers that make the world opposed to them (14)?
-
What are two sources that threaten the believers (14-15)?
Summary
The solution would seem to be to take us out of this world or remove us beyond harm’s danger. Isn’t that what we do with our babies? God, however, keeps us here for deeper reasons. Jesus only asks to keep us from the evil one so that we can (like Himself) accomplish what God desires to do through our lives.
Reflection and application questions
-
Do you have Christ’s joy in your heart? How can that joy increase?
-
In what ways do you see the world oppose your choices, beliefs and lifestyles?
-
How aware are you of Satan’s constant pursuit to end your effectiveness as a believer?
