Love not Lust: The Godly Man : When God touches a man's life.

Power of Love Over Lusts

Paul J. Bucknell

Many believe that they are experts in love. Love comes naturally. Life should show that this is not true. Love, however, is God's divine gift originating from Himself. God is love. Man's understanding of love is very limited even perverted. God's love, however, has no constraints. In this sense of Galatians 5:22-23, "Love ... against such things there is no law." Like light, love freely stretches outs its arms.

The Godly Man

God's love is intensive.
Nothing can stop the penetration of the rays of God's love. We see this most clearly in the sending of His only begotten Son Jesus Christ into the world to die for sinners. Here is love. God first loved us. Hope, love and joy all stem from God's good intention to help us in our miserable state. God doesn't need love; He is love. However, the rest of us live on the flow of divine love which first floods our souls and then pours out into the lives of others.

Love and Feelings
Divine love is known for giving while man's concept of love is limited to his feelings and passions of lust. They think love is a feeling originating from good vibes coming from another person. Love, for them, equals attraction. Attraction for them, no matter what the basis, serves as their authority of certain intimate touches, talk and glances. Today sodomy, adultery, fornication and even divorce are all legitimized by this ungodly sense of love. With it, all is permissable; without it, all former commitments and relationships can be instantly forgotten. The mutual attraction for many serves as a god that gives them guidance to ignore parents' advice, pastor's counsel, and common sense. This god is their passion and feelings.Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen (1 Peter 1:1).

Abraham, the father of faith, started that journey much earlier then they.

God's love gives rise to the other Great Commandment, "to love one another."
Man will not, cannot, love one another without God's empowering love. Without God's love, we are as a dead battery. We are designed to love but cannot. A careful study of I Corinthians13, the Bible's great 'Love Chapter,' will clear all confusion as to what true love it. Here we will discover love's genuine motivation, characteristics and duration. Christianity does not stand on what people say but on what people do - whether they love one another. Love requires us to put the needs of others above ourselves instead of the popular view which equates love in mutual pleasure.

Love True Power
Love displays its true power when pleasure is taken away. How does one perpetuate his kindness, care, gentle talk, noble deeds, etc. when the object of his love becomes violent, cold, harsh, unloving and very ungrateful? Here we discover the glorious and noble power of God's love which breaks through our resistant, prideful, arrogant and dark hearts. No wonder the red heart is the emblem of love. For it was the pouring forth of the blood of Christ that effectively sealed God's love into our lives.

FUNCTIONAL DEFINITION OF LOVE
Love is the commitment to care for others without respect to their response.

"Put me like a seal over your heart,
Like a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death, Jealousy is as severe as Sheol;
Its flashes are flashes of fire, The very flame of the LORD.
"Many waters cannot quench love, Nor will rivers overflow it;
If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, It would be utterly despised."
(Song of Solomon 8:6-7).

Purpose of this study on love:

  • That we may increase our delight, confidence and joy in God's intensive love.
  • That we may anticipate God's great love to have a greater impact on our lives.
  • That we may keep from living for our pleasures or by our lusts before or during marriage.
  • That we may me awed by God's divine love displayed in the sending of His only Son Jesus Christ.
