The series 'Gaining Perspective on God’s Purpose for Your Life' explores how God uses the lives of special characters like Joseph in Genesis 37-50 to increase our knowledge of Him and how He causes our spiritual growth. An advanced discipleship guide.
The study of other lives can bring great profit to our lives. Many of us will remember a history class teacher that brought some character from the past alive.
Others like to read biographies or view historical movies. Through understanding the life of others we can better see what others faced and the reward and consequences of their decisions. These studies are helpful when they become a point of reference for our own lives.
Some studies are more appropriate for us, depending on what areas we need to grow and develop in. We need to stand guard at what models we put before our eyes, though. God gave us a deep look into one person’s life in the scriptures because He wants to engage us on significant points that come alive through His life.
God was involved in this person’s life, and He wants us to know how He gets involved in the lives of all His people.
Don’t be fooled. The goal is not for us to be this person. Our lives, settings and problems will be completely different from his, but the insights into how God works through people that are committed to staying close to Him are absolutely moving.
Through this study we will look at the compelling life of Joseph. God used only a few chapters from the Book of Genesis to describe creation but thirteen chapters to highlight Joseph’s life. Why?
God shows us how He is involved the lives of His people. God does not only make us but lead us. He does not only place us somewhere and sometime on earth but intricately works through the incidents we meet up with in life.
God develops His people by modeling through Joseph the type of life He wants to have with us. He wants us to see our own lives through this perspective. As we study Joseph’s life, we need to carefully observe what God shows us. These principles lead to a strong faith and character.
After reading the above introduction, quickly scan through Genesis 37-50 (all but 39 is about Joseph). Try not to get bogged down in the reading unless you have leisure time. List at least five challenges Joseph faced.
Make sure you do your assignment. It helps us slow down so that we can purposefully reflect on areas we need to spiritually grow in.
