Psalm 36.1-12 Discerning Movie Standards [Slide #1]
Indiana Jones & Psalm 36
A couple of nights ago my daughter brought home an Indiana Jones and the Raider's of the Lost Ark movie from the library. I had some questions about the horrible visual scenes there, but my wife, two older daughters and I sat down and watched it together. There was some laughter, much excitement and too many violent scenes. But I let it go, that is, until this morning when I read Psalm 36. After I read the Psalm, I prayed through its major thoughts or at least I tried to. I could go through verses 1-4, but when I tried entering the next section starting in verse 5, I was kicked back to the first section.
Psalm 36:5 begins by describing God's glorious person. The first section writes about the evildoers.
The Holy Spirit was acting like an airport's metal detector but instead of checking luggage, He was examining my heart. I sensed it was the Indiana Jones movie causing the problem. But instead of openly acknowledging it and sending it by the examiner, I ignored my conscience. I tried again again to meditate on those great verses about God. Each time I was thrown back to the prior section for another check. I finally decided I had better deal with what I had tucked away in the corner of my heart. I asked Him what He didn't approve of. I was cautioned about five items.
