Danger of Self - Pity

A lot of times we say we want to be healed of our problems such as worry, but all we really want is someone else to bathe us with their attention. We want to lie down in a pool of self-pity.

Overcome Anxiety: Finding Peace, Discovering God - a bookWe worry so much that sometimes others catch our terrible plague of unbelief. Sometimes it gets very bad. We lose friends because they don't know what to do. We blame God for not understanding.

Those who reside in self-pity have not faced severe enough consequences to make them really want to face reality. They prefer blaming others and God for their problems rather than becoming responsible by trusting God. Trusting God would mean that they would have to confess and repent from their sins.

Self-pity is disguised worry with a greater emphasis on the past while fear is worry with a greater emphasis on the future. Like the enemies of Israel long ago, the problems will get worse and worse until you have nothing else. When you are really desperate, then you might cry out to the Lord for help.
