Learning how to approach God's Word to find much strength and encouragement.
Discovering God Through the Psalms has three specific goals through this study on the Psalms:
The outline is provided below.
The Psalms is a gift from God to renew and deeepen our relationship with Him. In this series we discuss not only what God has for us in that special intimacy with Him but how to establish or even restore that closeness with Him.
In this study we reduce our speed to look closely at one verse, Psalm 119:17.
There are ways to profitably study the Bible. I wanted to list the way that helps me the most, especially a verse in Psalm 119. They are more devotional rather than historical, which requires a bit more study.
➡ _________ on what the Psalmist asks and/or states from different Bible versions.
• 119:17: “Deal bountifully with Your servant, That I may live and keep Your word.” (NASB, ESV)
• 119:17: “Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word.” (NIV)
➡ Clarify unclear terms to the best of your ability; contrast or differentiate terms as it helps.
• ‘Bountifully’ means over in abundance, greater in quantity and quality than expected. Contrast with miserly, stingy or poorly.
➡ _________ how statements are linked: cause-affect; if-then; and, but, when-then, etc. Rephrase as necessary.
• Only when the Lord would magnanimously work in my life would I be able and willing to carry out His Word.
➡ Discern what moves, drives or stirs the author to make such statements or have such hopes.
The psalmist often reveals different fears or weaknesses. He is not sure if he can cope with the given circumstances–either with temptation, general weakness or pressure from family or studies. Put differently, he is sure he cannot get by without the Lord’s abundant help.
➡ _____________ each phrase, as you have time. Always make time to personalize it to affect your life.
• Literal: “Deal bountifully with me, your servant, that I may live and keep Your Word.”
• Amplify: “I need you to be extra gracious and kind to me. When you do, I will all the more be moved in my heart to keep each part of your word despite the pressures around me.”
➡ Respond by turning the personalizing into an amplified prayer.
• “Lord, you know the test that I am facing. I usually fret and spiritually go downhill when this happens. I need You to pour out your extra abundant grace and kindness so that I will stand firm, trusting You, and in the end be all the more motivated to keep each part of your word.”
So now, take Psalm 119:19 and apply it as above.
➡ Focus
• I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Thy commandments from me. (NASB) • I am a sojourner in the earth; hide not Thy commandments from me. (JPS)
➡ Clarify •
➡ Observe •
➡ Discern •
➡ Personalize • Literal:

➡ Respond •
Now for a week, meditate on one verse a day, using this approach until you begin to get very familiar with it.
