Your Foundations

Think through the godly foundations laid in your life. Who shaped your thinking? Were these people convinced of scriptural teaching? Have you gone back and examined these areas of your life and rebuilt them on scriptural principles? Explain.

General explanation.

Just like a buildings foundations are unseen, so it is with out lives. The foundation is unseen because it has to connect to the foundational ways in which we view and perceive life. I tend to agree that our basic strengths and weaknesses are developed when we are very young. This does not mean we cannot learn anything new. Of course not. These early patterns, though, do make it easier or harder to learn. They are a filter by which we interpret different things.

The point of this assignment is to help one be aware of these foundations. You might wonder, "If we can't see them, then why do you ask for us to tell you about them?" This is a good question.

There are two points to the question. Firsty, we need to realize that our lives are built on foundations. Many of us are just not aware of it and have never thought of it. Secondly, and this is more advanced, though we cannot easily discern the foundations of our life, we have a way we can detect what we learned for good or bad. We remember little from a young childhood, but we do remember things later on. Most of these times relate to our relationships with our parents or siblings.

People do not change much. Because of this, the way our parents have treated us when young are not very different from when we are a bit older. It is by going back to when we were a bit older that we can guess at what happened when we were tiny. Of course our parents might have changed if they came to know the Lord or took some parenting class or had marriage difficulty. Let us look at a few examples to show you what we mean.

Giving Up - "I can't do it."

One poor response from parents that create a poor foundation is when the parent gets desperate and tends to give up when things don't work as they want.

start going bad, then when she gets frustrated with the children, she will get exasperated, say certain phrases and either get

Indulging to ones desires

Another poor response to life is indulging in some kind of item that satisfies a hunger, longing, or sweet tooth. When a parent indulges oneself, there is a certain "I deserve that" or "I want that" thought that they give in to. It might seem to be innocent on the surface, but it can go much deeper. If it happens regularly, then basically they are training the child on how to indulge in ones desires. For example, maybe they just get lazy and don't want to cook, so they spend more money and go out to a restaurant. If this regularly happens, they tend to follow desires rather than wisdom and principle (not talking about student life now). Usually the training comes through different comments, both negative and positive. "I don't ...." and "I do want ...." They will also indulge the child's appetite for a sweet or toy because the baby wants. We will not remember it when young but later on we will see the same patterns.

By the way, we are not implying that you are able all of as
