Old Testament Books in a Chronological Chart
We have a copy that does not have the OT Book names in it. The student then is challenged to supply them after the explanation is given. This requires of course familiarity with the names of the Bible. Click to download this map (pdf).
Genesis shows how God called a man out from the world to live by faith. And yet it leads this same people that is shaped by this faith back into captivity. Joseph is a type for Messiah in enduring hardships and being greatly rewarded. They are left in Egypt. Exodus (lit. road out in Latin) shows the leaving of Egypt (and the world) under the leadership of Moses (a type for the Messiah). Numbers shows the fight between faith and doubt and the consequences of giving into doubt and the flesh. We all have our personal struggle we must win. Deuteronomy (literally second covenant) shows how God again gives the convenant for his people as they go into the land of Canaan.
Joshua (literally Jesus or Deliverer) leads people into the land. The people themselves must conquer it; Joshua only provides the way. Judges shows the failure of God's people to focus on God's purposes. This leads to the request to be like the world and have a king and an army in 1 Samuel. This leads to a confidence in the flesh more than God. 2 Samuel shows the glorious kingdom of David and the promise of the Messiah. 1 and 2 Kings records the many prophets that God sent to call God's people back to Himself but their stubborn refusal which brought forth the captivity first of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and then 150 years later the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
The Northern Kingdom never came back, but God miraculously intervened in world history by causing the Southern Kingdom of Judah along with God's Word and its promises to come back 70 years later as recorded in Ezra and Nehemiah. This closed the time of the Old Testament writings around 400 BC. It was as if God was silent unto the time of Jesus 400 years later. But meanwhile, an expectancy for the promised Messiah grew and grew.
