A House for Prayer

Purpose

Jesus’ cleaning out of the temple of the profiteers does not so much point us to salvation as much as the purpose of the church. The old system is condemned, but Jesus shows us God’s greater purpose for the people of God. All of us would become priests and we would, built on Christ the great Interceder, become the priests strategically placed in the world to bring the kingdom of heaven to earth’s shores. We are the House of Prayer. This is our calling! The question Jesus throws at our feet, “Are we corrupt like the priesthood back then because we do not emphasize prayer but what kind of foods or cars we like?” “Are we so busy in other matters of the world that we no longer fulfill our glorious calling?” (For full article)

There are three parts to this message. We will need to spend some time discussing the background to appreciate what Jesus is actually doing.

A) The Description of the Temple (Mark 11:15)
B) The Nature of Their Compromises (Mark 11:15-16)
C) The Need for Prayer (Mark 11:17)

Starter question:
What is your church's prayer life like? What should it look like?

Mark 11:15-19

15 And they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple and began to cast out those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those who were selling doves; 16 and He would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple. 17 And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, ‘MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS’? But you have made it a ROBBERS’ DEN.” (Mark 11:15-17) (Other references: Mt 21:12-17, Lk 19:45-46, and other time Jn 2:13-17).

God has so much more for His people, but we need to get back on track. Why have we been forever sitting at a bus station waiting for the bus. Jesus has come and made us one of the living stones in His House of Prayer. Let us get to the serious work of prayer now!
